Montclair State University students dissect the inefficiency and difficulties of scheduling courses in the school’s class registration system at the beginning of each semester.
Montclair State University students are required to choose certain classes that correspond with their major requirements. Many find the process to be confusing and chaotic, leading to a lack of credit requirements that prolong graduation dates.

Lucas Amato, a sophomore currently enrolled in the Finance program at the university, spoke on specific circumstances which prohibited him from creating a schedule to fit his preferences.
“My personal experience has been frustrating, I have had to wait over an hour just to register for classes I may not get into. Most of my classes have been delayed. I like to take my classes in person, but I’ve had to take many of my core classes online. This semester I had to change my entire schedule because certain classes were occupied, I had to take completely different classes,” said Lucas.
Jack Massett, a junior attending Montclair State University as a Communications and Media major, spoke on the challenges he faced when signing up for specific courses each semester.
“[The registration system] crashes too much, it is laggy, and I am not able to get into specific classes. I’ve had to delay taking certain courses… logging in at different times doesn’t do anything. I don’t think an academic advisor can help with that,” said Jack.
Montclair State University uses NEST as the primary resource in which their students search for upcoming courses to take throughout their time at the university. This platform centralizes many of the student and staff services available to everyone who attends or works here. Other services that NEST offers include the Degree Audit, Finance Management, and Personal information updates.
Freshmen at the university are required to take a Student Seminar class led by an academic advisor at Montclair State. This course teaches incoming freshmen the layout of NEST and how to register for the classes that students will need for the remainder of their college career. However, many find the problem to lie within the NEST system itself.
Jack and Lucas are only two of the many students who find the Montclair State University class registration system difficult and chaotic.
“I want more students to be able to get onto the program at once without it crashing or lagging,” said junior Jack Massett.
